The 2017 edition of the Latin Music Festival, a fiesta marking Latino Heritage Month with music, dance and food, was held Sunday at Hilton Head Island’s Shelter Cove Community Park.

Headlining the festival was La Sonora Dinamita, a Colombian musical group that plays cumbia, a South and Latin American music genre popular throughout that region.

The festival also featured Latino musicians from around the area, including the La Isla House Band. In addition, there were folkloric dance groups.

The Latin Music Festival will be held Sunday at Shelter Cove Community Park on Hilton Head Island, organizers announced in a news release.

The festival, now in its sixth year, will run from noon to 9 p.m. It is a celebration marking Latino Heritage Month through music, dance and food.

This year’s music headliner is La Sonora Dinamita, a Colombian musical group that plays cumbia, a South and Latin American music genre popular throughout that region. The news release says La Sonora Dinamita is one of the first cumbia groups to achieve international success and helped popularize the genre around the world.

Every now and then, a series of dramatic moving parts come together to create a theatrical event that is unique, remarkable and exceeds all expectations. I am thrilled to tell you that such a lineup of cultural and artistic circumstances did come together on Hilton Head last Friday night at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, when the cast of “The Color Purple” filled the stage of the Elizabeth Wallace Theater.

The award winning musical, based upon the 1982 book by Alice Walker and the 1985 Stephen Spielberg, Oscar-nominated film, the Broadway Show of 2005, and finally on the Broadway Musical Revival, 2013, is over the top. It will, by turns, charm, delight, sadden, distract, thrill and amaze.

There are a number of reasons why the production works so well.

Trying to decide where to take your kid trick-or-treating this Halloween? Here’s a list of area events.

Trunk-O-Ween at Shelter Cove Towne Centre (Hilton Head)

Where: Shelter Cove Towne Centre

When: Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 5-7 p.m.

Towne Centre Drive will be lined with classic cars from the Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival’s Car Club Showcase. The cars will be decorated and filled with candy. Shops at the centre will also be participating in the trick-or-treating.

The event will also feature Cappy the Clown, glitter tattoos and a bounce house.

‘Resilience’ will be the word of the day when TEDx comes to Hilton Head in October. And, just 12 months after Hurricane Matthew battered Beaufort County, the event will aim to celebrate all types of resilience found in the community and those who call the Lowcountry home.

Colin Quinn, best known for his stints hosting Weekend Update on ‘Saturday Night Live’ and appearing on MTV’s ‘Remote Control,’ is coming to the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina in 2018. And tickets are available now.
